Blue-green algae, also known as gloeocapsa magma, affects more than 80% of roofing systems in the country. It leaves dark black stains wherever it grows and makes millions of perfectly good roofs look old way before their time.
As a GAF Master Elite® roofing contractor, Thompson Roofing and Construction is no stranger to this unsightly growth. Gloeocapsa magma may be blue-green in color, but it is surrounded by a dark brownish-black shell that protects it against the sun’s rays. Over time, these dark shells cause the telltale streaking on the roof.
To combat this, we use GAF’s StainGuard Plus™ Time-Release technology. It features an unprecedented and powerful algae resistance, and the manufacturers have backed its efficiency with a 25-year limited warranty against blue-green algae discoloration.
An Algae-fighting Breakthrough
In the past, making your roofing shingles algae-resistant was with the use of a granule technology, which was developed more than a few decades ago. Algae thrives in wet environments and doesn’t take long to spread across an entire neighborhood if left unchecked. These granules contained a layer of algae-fighting copper that was released onto the roof whenever it got wet. While this method is effective, it had its drawback – as the roof ages, those older granules release less and less copper, which in turn reduces the algae resistance of the shingles.
StainGuard Plus Time-Release technology from GAF follows the same process of releasing algae-fighting copper when activated by moisture, but far more efficiently and for longer. Unlike the older layered technology, StainGuard Plus technology features specially engineered capsules that have been infused with tons of copper microsites. This ensures that the copper remains within reach, ready to be activated in combating ugly blue-green algae stains.
