A pressure washer is a useful cleaning tool that uses “high-pressure” water to remove grease and grime, mold and mildew, bird droppings and other pesky dirt that may come into contact with your siding or the exterior of your home. If you want to do it yourself and save a few bucks, here are some useful tips you may want to consider when embarking on this cleaning project.
1. Prep the Area Surrounding Your Home
Move outdoor furniture about 10 feet away from the exterior wall to avoid things being thrown around if the power washer goes awry. Water your plants before blasting any cleaning detergents on the siding to prevent them from absorbing these harmful chemicals. Or, better yet, cover them up for the time being.
2. Inspect Your Home Exterior
An inspection is needed to see if your siding or gutters might need to be replaced before starting the cleanup. Loose and damaged siding may be the start of larger damage to your walls if water begins to seep inside.
3. Choose Your Cleaning Arsenal
Be sure to read the labels closely, and look for something that is specifically made for pressure washing vinyl siding. If you want to be more environmentally friendly, mix one-fourth cup of laundry detergent with a one-half cup baking soda in two cups of warm water until dissolved. Add in one-fourth cup of household vinegar. This concoction can be poured into the reservoir of the pressure washer, and you can clean away. Vinegar is great in killing mold or algae. Remember to rinse the siding with clean water afterwards.
4. Follow the Proper Techniques
Set the nozzle according to the level of pressure you want. A narrow nozzle usually has the strongest pressure. Adjust the spray angle perpendicular to the grimy surface, or spray ahead at eye-level. Be sure not to spray from the bottom and risk stripping off your siding. Too much pressure can also strip away paint.
