At Thompson Roofing, we believe it is important to pause, reflect on what has been accomplished, and look ahead with purpose. Our 2026 Midyear Meeting gave us the opportunity to do exactly that, and this year it was made even more meaningful by a special guest.

We were honored to welcome Mr. Jon Barkhouse, President and CEO of GAF, to speak with our team.

As the leader of North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, Mr. Barkhouse works with contractors across the United States every day. His perspective on the roofing industry, the challenges ahead, and the opportunities available was both insightful and encouraging.

What made his visit especially meaningful was not his discussion of products or market conditions. Instead, he spoke about people, culture, and trust.

Mr. Barkhouse shared that what first stood out to him about Thompson Roofing was that we are building something that goes beyond being a roofing company. He recognized our commitment to investing in people, helping one another grow, and building a culture rooted in strong values. He explained that those qualities strongly align with GAF’s own mission and values.

He also recognized Thompson Roofing as Alabama’s only GAF Three Star President’s Club Master Elite Contractor, reminding our team that this distinction is not easily earned and reflects a consistent commitment to excellence.

Throughout his presentation, Mr. Barkhouse emphasized that long term success is built on trust. He challenged us to continue creating value, serving customers with integrity, and remaining committed to doing things the right way, even when the market becomes more challenging.

His message was a timely reminder that while the roofing industry continues to evolve, the principles that create lasting success remain the same. Strong relationships, exceptional service, and a commitment to people will always matter.

We are grateful that Mr. Barkhouse invested his time in our team and shared his vision for the future of our industry. His encouragement and recognition served as a reminder that the work being done at Thompson Roofing is making an impact beyond our local community.

In December 2022, my wife and I decided for various family reasons it would be good for us to move to north AL. We got the kids enrolled in school for the next school year, and I started looking for a job.

Come July, with school starting the first of August, I still didn’t have a job lined up. So I did what any sensible person would do in such a situation: I went to camp for a week.

The first day at camp, at a distance I noticed a bright yellow truck. It was for a roofing company in the 256 area code. “256 is north AL,” I briefly thought but continued about my day. Later that day the truck was parked by my van. I wondered if it was just coincidence or perhaps more?

It turned out that the truck belonged to a new camp staff member (dressed as brightly as the truck). I talked to him about the company, and he gave me the owner’s phone number. I contacted him.

On Saturday, when most people were headed home to sleep off camp, I headed to Athens for the most informal job interview I have ever had – sitting in the owner’s living room on his couch. 

He was looking for someone for the gutter crew. Fortunately he didn’t ask what my experience was with gutters, or I may have had to tell him that a year ago while cleaning gutters I fell off an eight-foot ladder and broke my elbow.

The main question I remember being asked was if I had a fear of heights (I did.), to which I answered, “Not that I can’t overcome.” I didn’t know at the time that a forty-foot ladder, and a lift that would go even higher, were in my future.

In a few weeks we moved to north AL, and I began my work with Thomspon Roofing and Construction.

When I began my job search, I thought it would be great to find a godly man who owned his own business and could use an extra pair of hands. What I found was so much more: a godly man running a company full of other godly men who were willing to tolerate me.

During my job search, I was at a social event with some get-to-know-you activities. One of them asked, “If money was not an issue and you could have any job you wanted, what would it be?” I simply answered, “Something serving others.” I have found this at Thompson.

Today the Thompson Roofing and Construction Commercial Department received training and continuing education from our partners at Elevate.

Our team and crews went through the details and specifications of hot torch applied modified bitumen rolled roofing as well as cold application systems, making sure every step is done correctly from start to finish.

It may not be new information, but it is pivotal that we stay up to date on industry practices and standards. That is how we make sure every roof we install meets the level of quality our customers expect. We ensure our customers we will be providing confidence from the top down!

How could someone be passionate about a roof?

Siding is siding. A gutter is a gutter. A window is a window. Who cares about the window trim, the block foundation footer at my house, or even the top of my chimney?

There was a time when I did not care about or give much thought to these various elements of a house and the property where we live. I had always enjoyed yard work and anything where I could turn around and see the fruits of my labor, but that was it. I paid attention to work that I could do with my own two hands.

I did not even think about the parts of my house that required specialized trade knowledge.

I did not know a thing about the things I did not know.

Interestingly enough, I have always loved home improvement and remodeling shows. This Old House with Norm Abram and Bob Vila. I even enjoyed the more staged shows like TLC’s Trading Spaces and ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

Here I was in North Alabama, watching makeovers and roof replacements on old houses in the Northeast. I loved it.

That has not changed. I am subscribed to a couple dozen home repair and DIY channels on YouTube that I watch on a predictable rotation, along with more traditional media and the Chip and Joanna Gaines style takeover.

These shows have inspired and motivated me, from tinkering on little projects around the house to fully remodeling our home.

My wife and I always dreamed about building our house. After ten years of marriage, we were excited to be fortunate enough to do just that. We moved from the bustling metropolis of Athens, Alabama, right down the road from Huntsville, up to Elkmont, Alabama.

I will write about that process another time, but needless to say, all of that dormant brain power toward the trades of the home that I once thought were over my head or not feasible for me to approach quickly became top of mind. When it came to the house we were building to make our home, everything mattered.

Roof, siding, gutters, brick, doors, windows, concrete, HVAC, house wrap, framing, labor, crews, cleanup, dumpsters, gravel, shingles, metal, vent pipes, boots. All of it became pressing subjects in my school of life, and I was having quizzes, tests, midterms, and finals every week.

I had to pay attention in a hurry. None of this could be neglected.

I never realized how much information and detail was involved in all of these scopes of work. It seemed simple enough, except for the roofing part. I am not good with heights, so that was not so simple.

As we built our house, I started to see why someone could be passionate about the things we put on a house. Maybe not because it holds a special place in their heart, but because it protects the things that truly do.

Family photos and videos. Birth certificates. Passports. Heirlooms and sentimental items. Inherited jewelry and valuables. Phones, laptops, and hard drives. Drawings, baby items, awards. Beds. Favorite spaces. Memories.

Making sure this line of defense is done not just well, but with the utmost attention and care matters.

During the build of our house back in 2021, I was hired to work at Thompson Roofing and Construction in Madison, Alabama. This career change did not just suggest that I pay attention to these areas of home building and maintenance. It demanded it.

Now more than ever, I see the value and importance of roofing, gutters, siding, and more. I care because it is my job, but I also care about these things on the exterior of my house because I can have confidence that the things I care about on the interior are safe.
